Am I feeding the wrong food?

help kind friends, being bombarded with conflicting advise from vets and shouted at by friends and cat... !
I’ve taken on board all the wealth of information here re wet/raw food and it’s taken me weeks to persuade Mum to eat a couple of meals made up of a mixture of 3 types of mince (beef, turkey and pork) all lean fat with supplements and some wild Salmon oil.
Mum who’s very overweight continues to demand some dry food and I do give it in much reduced quantity
In between the main meals. On recommendation I now give Thrive dry food which is supposedly the lowest in carbs in the uk.
Mum however has gained weight and I’m desperately upset about it. The vet thinks I should stick to the dry “diabetic’ food which they claim is like giving ‘medicine’ Friends who see how stressed I’ve become say the same...
her levels are not too bad but the weight is really an issue...
Where am I going wrong...?

Mmmm I understand your frustration, Zee. Two things - maybe the food you're giving is excellent but very concentrated nutritionally and you don't need as much as you think? Ditto the Thrive, perhaps it's ok but in even smaller amounts than you're giving.
I'm afraid I disagree with the vet pushing you to give dry prescription food. Medicine? I can't see how.
I do sympathise with having an overweight cat, it's not easy to get them to lose weight.
I'll tag @Elizabeth and Bertie and see if she has any ideas.

Hi,

it is really a challenge with dry food addicts sometimes!
You might find it helpful to look thru the blog of Dr. Pierson, renowned cat nutrition guru about
Transitioning Feline Dry Food Addicts to Canned Food - here is some good tips on food transitioning link.

With all due respect to your vet wet low carbs food is the best for cats.
You can try crushing the dry kibble pieces into a powder and sprinkle it on top of the wet you'd like her eat.
Little by little she might start liking the wet food.

I hope it helps but please ask any questions you might have.

Thank you both. I have of course read everything on transitioning to wet food etc. I’ve tried the lot. I’m happy she likes the raw so maybe make it less dense.. maybe bit more water in the mix...

Yes that's a good idea. I know it's tempting to give in and feed the dry she likes, but raw is so much better for her.
Try not to get too depressed about it - you are doing the right things, really!

No kidding... never imagined how challenging and complicated dealing with a diabetic puss...

Zee! Greetings again. It is challenging, isn't it? And I thought raising children was challenging! Well, it was, but as they got older you could reason with them, cats..well not so much.
How are you my dear? it sounds like you are going through some struggles, but you are doing your best for Mum. It's not easy introducing a cat to a new routine. Hugs to both Mum and Eric and take it easy on yourself. Your friends aren't caring for Mum, and they certainly shouldn't be shouting at you. Many of us have dealt with conflicting advice from our vets, and find that educating ourselves is about what other feline diabetic caregivers have found actually works is a good way to go.
Do find a treat or do an activity that brings you some pleasure and/or relief, even momentarily. You need to be relaxed and healthy to care for the puss cats.

Ah darling Lou how kind you are. Brought tears to my eyes... yes a bit of a struggle - been dealing with Mum developing urinary tract infection so Anti-biotic ... better now and not being to get away out of the city to get a blast of much missed sea air...
Mum is such a darling except when she refuses food and than shouts at me for dry food... hard to refuse.. I’ll regain good humour.. soon..
How are you and Idjit (which I’m sure he isn't) doing?
Couple of images for you.. Mum in her much hated carrier today and Eric who retained street cat characteristics... A8E3371F-795F-4CCF-82DF-B7DCC5236AAE.jpegF31E09C0-BAF6-49CF-AD61-0132C8DD4A08.jpeg

I'm sorry to hear Mum had UTI, that's never any fun at all. Idjit still thinks he's King of the Universe, don't tell Eric cause he probably thinks he is. I was out of commission for a bit, got very ill after daughter's visit but I'm regaining stamina and strength every day. Hubby took care of house, shopping, meal prep, Idjit and me so I have been playing catch up now. I wouldn't mind some out of town time at the ocean side myself, it's been a long time since I have walked in the sand barefoot.
Keep plugging, Zee, and Tanya's idea about crushing the dry food and using as a topper is a good one. Might work, who knows? They like what they like, just like we do. It's hard to change when you get older, and I have found as I get older I gotta change a whole lotta stuff! Ugh. You take good care of you while you are taking good care of Mum and Eric. Love the pics, thank you!
