Carmelita Update

Hi there, LLanders!

Been trying to post more, but (obviously) not successfully! Wanted to put a note in case anyone wondered how the Princess of All is doing...

Mostly good.

Her BG has been wobbly since we got Captain Darling. Not totally surprising, as she is coming up on 10 years old, and he is not even 1 year old, and extremely rambunctious. To put it plainly - he pesters her. Hell, he pesters *US*. He's like having a short, furry rugby team in the house. She's handling it better, he's learning to be more gentle, and we're training him to lay off when we tell him too, but it all takes time. Cats only take about 5 years to get to social maturity, right...? *sigh*

We also had a bad pen of insulin. Totally useless. Not only did it fail utterly to control her BG, but it took a looong time to work our way back from that. Also, our SS was taking forever to load, so we started a new one with the new year. The old stuff still exists, but Google Docs is kind of a pain sometimes. Could be my computer? Who knows. Anyway, that happened. If you look at it, you'll see she's bouncing a lot from the lower ranges. (I might even update it with the last few days! Wouldn't THAT be awesome...) Every time we think she can have a dose reduction, it's like she never comes back down from the rebound. :? (Yes, we do hold the higher dose through the rebound.)

And... yesterday she ate a sewing needle and 20cm of thread. Although we couldn't stop her or get it out before she swallowed it, she did get to the vet and under the x-ray within 20 minutes, and had surgery not too long after. Also lucky--she had skipped breakfast, so was already fasted, makes surgery easier. Especially tummy surgery. The surgery went well, and she is recovering. At this moment, she's recovering under a bookcase. In case someone around here has another stupid idea of taking her to the vet for another checkup. (we just got back about an hour ago) Her adorable white belly has been shaved! :-|

The vet did say, most of her organs look pretty good. Even her pancreas is in good shape, except for that inadequate production of insulin thing. However, he said her spleen is enlarged--the size of a small dog spleen. Said normally that is seen with ongoing infection... but we haven't had any sign of that. Her blood work comes back with no white cell count complaints. We do not like mysteries!

That's us in a nutshell.

Wow Greg what an update. Cant imagine the stress youve recently been going through. Glad it all worked out for miss Carm. Happy your back and hope you stay!!

Thanks for updating us. :-D
OMG, she ate a sewing needle?!?! I am soooooo glad you saw her do it!!!! Also glad surgury went well and things look good inside. Give that nice shaved white tummy a rub for me.
Have a great day. I hope Carmelita forgives you real soon.

And thanks for posting this morning in my condo.

Hi Greg. Nice to see you and Carm. OMG I can't believe she ate a sewing needle - but how great it is that you saw her do it so that you could react quickly. Whew!! Hope things calm down for you soon - I know how crazy it is with a new one in the home - we have 5 of them that are a few days shy of 10 months. Sending speedy healing vines to Ms. Carm.

Hey Greg, Glad for the update on Carmelita. Angel can sympathize with the younger sibling problem... He's 14 and one-eyed one year old Cashew is a royal pain in the butt pestering him. Glad you took care of the needle thing so quickly and safely. Why are cats attracted to such things. Good to hear from you; welcome back.

Hi Greg! Glad Carmelita is doing well, despite having eaten a sewing needle and needing surgery :o

Bald tummies are smooshy and cute :-D Just ask Squishy dancing_cat

Hi Greg - nice to see you both again :) Wow! You have had quite an eventful time - thank goodness you were there to KNOW that she ate the needle and could act quickly! Sending good vibes for a quick recovery for the Princess :)

Spending speedy surgery recovery vines for the Princess. Thanks for the update. you have been missed around here. Jasper misses his German speaking partner :)

GREG! Miss Carm! Capt.!
So Happy to see you here!! So upset that Miss Carm was that hungry that she ate a needle :o Hope she recovers real soon & NICE CATCH!!
Moonie's bg is quite like Miss Carm..looking real nice green & suddenly up she goes for no apparent reason, then great difficulty getting it back down! Listen Miss Carm, your 2 yr annifursary is coming up, dont you want to show your green?? ohmygod_smile
Glad to see you Greg & always the most interesting stories...

So happy that Carmelita is over that experience with the sewing needle...that must have been traumatic
for you all. Lots of luck with you new addition and with Carmelita and many thanks for the great WCR!
Hope to see you around here all the time from now on... :-D

Great to hear from you! What a day you must have all had! Gabby swallowed dental floss -- almost as bad as a needle. My two kitties are about the same ages as Carm and Capt. Darling so I completely understand the pestering aspect of their behavior. I hope Carmelita makes a swift recovery.

Greg, it's great to see you and get an update on Carmelita. Glad you were home and able to get her fixed up quickly. She's probably saying to Captain Darling, "see, you're not the only one that can get in trouble." But does she have to choose such extremes for attention?

I hope her BGs smooth out soon...

Wow. Very wow. Glad to hear she's home and recovering under the bookshelf...

Glad for the update, and since I'm still kinda new, HI!

Best-
Michele

Hi there Greg, so nice so see you around! Wow, poor Ms. Carm! So glad you caught that before it turned into something horrible!. I wonder if Carm has learned her lesson about eating shiny things with thread attached.

Nice to hear that the Captian is doing little itty bitty kitty things and getting on everyones last nerve, lol. That's what he is supposed to do, right????

Sending speedy recovery vines to Ms. Carm and settle down vines to the Capt. Have a great day, Greg!

Oh wow. What a scary thing, eating a needle and thread. Good thing you were there to see it and handle it quickly. Poor girlie, wonder what she was thinking.

Glad she is on the mend and you know kittens are cute and adorable and all, but they are full of energy and excitement and well...you just hope they outgrow it and when they do, you wish it back.

Cats - whatcha gonna do!

So good to see you Greg and Ms. Carm/Captain Darling. Guess Ms. Carm earned the title "that darn cat" with the needle episode. Glad she is on the mend. Hope to see more of you. Miss all the antics of your household and the kitties.

Wow, wow, wow and wow! What an update, wish you could come over I would make you a well needed Jantini cocktail. I'm glad that she is doing well after the surgery. What a scary thing.
I have a new kitty now and she is about seven months. Holy hell on wheels she is. I thought she had ate a bobby pin and rushed her in for an exray, thankful she had not. I was a basket case, not wanting her to have to have surgery so soon after her spay and then the expense would have been bad. Did your vet say anything to you about how toxic metal is?
I'm so sorry that you, Mrs. Greg and Carmelita had to go through that but thankful that you saw her do it.
My new kitty eats everything and I'm so careful but seems there is still always something that spells danger around here. Plus she is so fast. Boris really likes her but MisMew hates her and lately she is really bothering Mew. I have to be on guard duty all the time. Mew has cancer and new kitty is causing her stress, which is upsetting for us.

Bummer about the cartridge but I'm sure her bg's will be back in order in no time.
Hope you can find some time to keep us updated soon.
Take Care of you and the little bare bellied girl.
Sandy

Glad to see you posting again, even if it's about little rugby teams and sewing needle nom-nom events - geeeez! Wishing her a speedy recovery.
Hope things calm down, and you can get Carm's BGs on a better path soon.

eeek. turned down breakfast for sewing needle and thread? chicken isn't good enough for her anymore?

glad you guys caught it, and that she sailed through surgery. tell her she needs to stop snacking on junk food.

Happy to see a Carmelita update, although I wish it hadn't had the words "needle" and "surgery" in it! So glad you caught it. Carmelita will be back to her ruler-of-the-universe role soon. :-D

Wow, when you have an update....you really have an update! Sorry to hear Carmelita had to have surgery...glad she is doing OK. Nice to hear from you....I hope things settle down quickly.

Hi Greg!
It's nice to see you again on the board!!!! We missed you!!!!

Thanks for the news on Carmelita.... a sewing needle! MG, good catch! I don't know how such a thing can be tasty, but than again I don't find liver particularly appealing but Tizon sure loves it. Good thing is that you caught the action early enough to prevent complete disaster, although I'm sure it was a big enough event already. Glad to hear that her majesty has recovered from surgery.

Take care and please come back more often!

OH, my! When you post, there is always a fun little story...but this was was unfortunately a TRUE story, and not much fun at all for any of you! Yikes! A sewing needle!!! How scary for all of you! Good catch!

Great to hear from you guys...I hope the next update is a bit less traumatizing for poor Ms. Princess Carmelita!

Judith and Thomas (GA)

greg, glad to see you here. sorry about the sewing needle. yikes.
i think our pen isnt great either. had to up the dose to get it to do anything. normally we get cartridges from canada. not sure if it's our local pharmacies but this is the 3rd thing i've gotten here that didn't seem up to snuff. you're closer to the manufacturer, tho, so i'm surprised the insulin had issues.

hope carmelita is back in her beautiful range soon.

(cleo had a humongous spleen, too. looked the size of a small cheese cutting board as opposed to the eyeglass case size it should be. i had it removed. she did turn out to have lymphoma that wasn't definitively diagnosed til surgery.)

Sorry to hear that Carmelita had to have surgery, but thank goodness it was caught quickly and went well. Sending vines for a speedy and full recovery.

Hi Greg!

Poor Carmelita :o Its a good thing you saw her eat it, so you could act fast. Hope she recovers quickly and more importantly may her belly curls grow back even better than before.

I can sympathize with you about Capt. Darling. My Sammy is the youngest of 4 and her pesters them and us too. Hes about 5 so your right you've got a ways to go.

It was nice to hear from you. I've missed you around here. Looking forward to more Carmelita and Capt. Darling stories. :YMPEACE:

I totally get that! I recently went through similar with Tiba, a Bengal kitten. He drove Mim crazy with his antics and the stress for both of us was hmm, "stressful". It was bitter-sweet that Tiba was diagnosed with a heart-defect and went back to the (###hole) breeder who claimed they would try to "re-home" him. Mim seems much happier being an only-child  .

Hey Greg - great to see a post from you and the gang! Sorry about Miss Carms latest adventure, but so glad you were there. Hope she heals very quickly.

Hi Greg! So nice to see a Carmelita update.. :-D
Glad that everything turned out okay.. and that you caught her misadventure.. yikes!!
Sounds like the Captain keeps the excitement up in the Greg family household.. well your never bored... lol!

Sending tummy healing vibes to Carm!

hmm, I always enjoy a Carmelita update but I would prefer one that didn't involve surgery! :o

I'm glad you were home and saw what she had done so no permanent damage was done. Surely there are better ways to get attention...

Good to see you, Greg!

Echo on the sentiments that it is very good to see you posting. We miss your input on LL. I am sure it must have been scarey seeing that needle disappear. It sounds like more of a Captain antic than a Cam antic. I hope she heals quickly!

Hi Greg

Nice to hear the Carmelita update......although I did not like hearing about the needle and surgery. I hope the "princess" feels better soon.
Will we be seeing more of you now??

yikes! just coming to this now...
thank g_d you knew she ingested it and were able to get her in right away. glad she's recovering at home.
what an experience!

So great to see you Greg! You are missed quite a bit around these parts! Early mornings just aren't the same without you.

((((Carmelita)))) Very happy that she is recovering well from surgery. How scary!

Happy New Year!

Nice to see you back.
Kitties seem to have a penchant for sewing needles recently. Kramers buddy ate one before xmas-whatever next

Good old Captain Darling keeping you on your toes

Glad you are back! We missed you
Sorry to hear Princess had surgery and you were able to intervene quickly and that she is doing much better. I have been thinking of getting a brother for Skippy but hesitant because of what he will do...

I was just popping in to FDMB and saw your posting. Let me just say how glad I am that you actually SAW Carmelita eat the sewing needle. I shudder to think what might have happened if it took days to figure out what was bothering her... She is one lucky kitty! Hope you figure out what the enlarged spleen is all about - at least you know to be watching it closely in the future... Thanks for posting your update - you were one of the first people who helped Brownie and I almost a year ago and I'll be forever grateful to you for that! Keep sending updates, but please, Carmelita, no more shenanigans!
