I know right now most of you are in bed sleeping, and many of you are busy with your own cats or helping out here in LL however,.........
There has been a heated discussion on Think Tank about PZI vs. Lantus/Levemir, the PZI users flock like flies on S*** to defend/support thier insulin, some former PZI users that have switched are posting as well (most of them have long term diabetics for whom remission is less likely). The original poster is currently on Caninsulin (Dx about 5 weeks ago) and wants to change insulin. Regaurdless of if YOU have used PZI or not what would YOU choose knowing what you know now about Lantus/Levemir? Isn't the data overwhelmingly indicating that the L's are THE BEST choice for a newly diagnosed cat in the majority of cases, and that remission is not only possible but very likely? You should be shouting from the rooftops, even if you have no experience with other insulins (PZI or V/C/N) tell your story, rather your cat is still on insulin or went OTJ after 2 years or 2 weeks! Almost every Lantus/Levemir case is for the most part a success story. How many people that have used other insulins before switching to L's switched back to the "old" insulin? I'm betting not many!
There are several newbies postin on health in the last 12 hours, one is here viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1532 they are interested in Lantus, but the vet generally Rx's Vetsulin or PZI. Go now! The PZI peeps are already cheering for thier insulin, where are you guys? Where are the lists of OTJ kitties from LL? Links to the Marshall/Rand studies where all Lantus cats went OTJ, but only 1/2 of PZI cats and even less on Vetsulin?
Another newbie who did get Lantus Rx just picked it up (she posted in the same thread from above) she is devistated at the cost of the insulin which I think she got in a 10ml vial not pens and the pharmacist has told her after 28 days she is going to have to throw out $80 worth of the unused insulin, now she's asking if there is something more cost effective than Lantus! HELL NO!!!!!!!!! Go tell her about getting pens instead, and about the fact that Lantus often can be used longer than 28 days, make sure she knows to keep it in the fridge (the pharmasist probably told her she didn't need to) Look it up peeps, Lantus pens cost how much (about $120?) depending on your dose that's 5 pens which should last at a minimum 5 months, the cost of the syringes is also minimal. I never bought PZI, but I have heard peeps say it is about $100 for a vial (100ml) it probably doesn't last 5 months, and if it's U40 and you don't use U100 syringes with a conversion, U40 syringes are only availble from the vet and cost much more!
Come on peeps, It is my opinion that every newly diagnosed cat should be put on Lantus (or Levemir) ASAP. Sure there are cats that have gone OTJ on PZI, or Vetsulin but far fewer and IMHO those cats would have gone OTJ on anything and likely just from diet change alone. I pissed around for 3 months with Caninsulin getting nowhere, I switched to Levemir and got my dry foodie eventually OTJ, I had better numbers after 2 weeks on Lev than I had the whole 3 months on Caninsulin. If I had started on Levemir from day 1 I don't think I would have spent 8 months on insulin total, and probably less than the 5 months it took on Levemir to get OTJ. Ok, I also had a hard core dry addict that I didn't get 100% off dry till after remission, but I never could have regulated him on any other insulin while feeding him kitty crack I'm sure.
So take 5 minutes and go support your school (ah I mean insulin) :RAHCAT
These people need advice from current users of these insulins, or recent users and people with success stories of OTJ, so those of you napping in your lounge chair at the Falls, WAKE UP and go visit Health and nudge these people in the right direction. Why let them get all thier advice from long-term PZI users (who have no idea what OTJ means ohmygod_smile ) or moldy oldies that haven't had a cat on insulin for 10 years (when LL didn't exsist, and no one knew what Tilly was) it's always the same people wishy washy people (not saying thier advice isn't good about many things) but it is not current first hand experience about choosing an insulin. How many of you here if you became the owner of another suagr kitty tomorrow would ask should I try another insulin first?
Ok stop reading this and go, it doesn't matter if you have 6 months or 6 days experience, the litaruture speaks for itself!
