I agree. support as long as you can.

2 questions...
have you checked your one drop dose to see if anything is actually coming out of the syringe? Some syringes are different, when I tried to do one drop,
I got nothing, and had to add a drop just to get one out.

Has Elizabeth ever had an xray to check for arthritis? Or has she had a dental?
Both items "can" keep bgs in the blues....more than greens.

I had that issue with Shadow... She went otj but would keep popping up into the blues....
it turned out the arthritis pain was boosting her numbers. When I addressed her pain, she went all green.

I did a lot of testing back when I went to the one drop dose, and yes, with the syringes I use, one big drop that comes out if the plunger is at the zero line. Sometimes after the shot if I push the plunger very hard a miniscule drop comes out. But I believe she gets most of that one large drop in her shot.

Liz shows no signs of arthritis. She gallops all over the house, hurdling the couch, jumps up on things, wrestles with the dog, and climbs trees. And she had her teeth checked in December and they looked good. No one said anything about needing them cleaned, but I can ask next time I take her in.

I stopped in and talked to the vet today. There are a lot of vets in the clinic I go to, and on Fridays you never know who is there. I had never met the vet I spoke to today, but he looked at Elizabeth's chart and was supportive of all that's been done, and said all you people on the FDMB know a lot more than he ever will about diabetes. :) And he said wow are you lucky with Elizabeth as things don't usually go as well.

While there I picked up some canned Hill's m/d, which she was eating until two weeks ago when I started feeding her Fancy Feast. I'm going to do a little test and see if anything changes.

The automatic pet feeder is ordered and will be here next week. I think feeding at +9 as has been suggested by Wendy and Julie (and maybe some others as well?) might be helpful, so we shall see.

Thank you for all your advice and support!! :cat:

she just may need that little bit of support to the end....

sounds like your trip might be an opportune time to try that trial.... after all, you can always go back to the last dose.

good timing on your part.... :D

Rhiannon,
Is it okay to do a trial without testing? Should I give her shots up until I leave and then test her when I get home?

it becomes okay if you didn't have anyone to cat sit while you were gone..
Not all of us have options and have to work with what we have.

unless she earns a decrease, you should continue the support as long as you can.

I currently have no help... and if I had to go somewhere, no one else could shoot.... or test or anything....

we all love our data.... but you have to have a life too.

If you get the autofeeder and can go a week with her in all normal numbers with that +9 snack, then you have time to get into a trial before you go. I too would feel nervous leaving a kitty on a one drop dose if they weren't going to be tested.

What a supportive vet you talked to today!

We like that vet! :D "We" being me, of course. :D:D:D

Vicki, do you have any documentation with your glucometer that says "the normal blood sugar range for a diabetic cat using this meter is x-y?" Marje is doing some testing with an AT2 and comparing it to her human glucometer and it is running significantly higher than we have thought the AT2 ran. That might change the picture on Elizabeth's dosing.

Can you look and see if you have something like that in the packaging?

Julie, I will read the literature that comes with the AlphaTrak and see if the numbers are there. I believe I have looked before, but I don't remember.

I do have a neighbor directly across the street who comes and takes care of Liz and my dog while I'm out of town. She has two dogs I take care of while she's gone so it works out well. She wouldn't be comfortable testing Liz or giving a shot. If Liz needs that, I can board her, but I hate to do that to her - a cage - ugh!, and my dog would not enjoy being alone. If she were on more than one drop I would be more worried about it, but if she needs it maybe I can see about one of the techs coming to check her and give her shots. Ahhh, taking care of the kids....

All it says is:
Lower than 65 mg/dL means Low blood glucose/hypoglycemia
Higher than 250 mg/dL means High blood glucose/hyperglycemia
:cat:
I think I looked at the AlphaTrak site online when I first got it and didn't find anything, but I will look again.

I haven't seen a cat climb a tree for years, it must be lovely to watch.

Bron, it is lovely if a cat climbs a tree and then can get down. It's not lovely when the fire department has to be called, because the cat isn't coming down. This has never happened with Liz, but I have had it happen with a couple other cats. :nailbiting:
