Not sure if I am too late to catch you today. I may be.
I have given Sheba 3 doses of 7 units and today she came off the bounce and had a really strong cycle. I had to give her honey from + 3 to try and control the drop. (I am using honey instead of HC to see if it is better.) Even so I think she probably dropped too quickly again. She kept dropping despite the honey and HC (I ended up giving her HC as well) and I thought I was going to have to take her with me on the school run. I gave her a good helping of HC and honey at +5.5 and managed to stop the drop. I didn't want her to go too low as I was not looking for a reduction.

My question is: could I reduce the dose just slightly by say .25 unit so the drop was less strong. It would still be an increase from the previous dose but not as big. I know percentage wise it is not much but she has in the past responded well to slight increases when she is getting close to the right dose.
It may not look like a strong cycle but it was, and I am concerned it will just become a vicious circle of big drop then bounce. Just wanted your thoughts on it and will do whatever you think best.

If you'd like to drop back to 6.75U, there's nothing wrong with trying it and see what happens. You can always go back up if the numbers don't get where you want them

Would have been interesting to know if she would have dropped below 50 without all the honey....she probably would have, but until we see it, we tend to say it didn't happen.
 
Without a doubt she would have dropped under 50. But I was trying to stop her dropping too fast and I wasn't looking for a reduction. She has gone back down to 68 at +8.75. I have been out for a couple of hours picking up kids from school. Just back.

68 is a nice safe number....if you can get her to eat a little of her regular low carb food, she'll probably surf the rest of the cycle

Might want to get a +11 next so you have some time to think about your next Preshot

Yes I am quite happy to leave her at 68. I would have been happy to let her go a bit lower than I did and just surf, but I was mindful I had to be out the door at a certain time for 2 hours and I didn't want to leave her when she was still dropping.

Tell China that Sheba waved to her in the lagoon but she didn't see her. She was too busy playing.:joyful:;)
 
You want her at a dose where she can maximize the amount of time in green and get her body used to that normal range of numbers. You can try cutting back .25U as one option. The other option is to stick at the higher dose and try to prevent the reductions with higher carb food (or honey). I think you've seen the post on Feeding the Curve? You can do either option, but the second will require more monitoring and can be harder on the bean, especially with Lev and the later nadir.

Thanks Wendy. Yes I have read the feeding the curve post several times. I understand the concept of preventing a reduction and I am happy to do that.
You are right that the higher amount of insulin requires more monitoring and is harder on the bean. With Sheba being a diver, I find I have to monitor the drop closely to try and stop it getting away from me and then when she drops low, I have to monitor that. So there is no downtime during the cycle. Apart from anything else it is quite expensive as far as the strips go.
I decided to go with the lower dose and see where that takes us. If it doesn't take her into greens I will go back up. It is still an increase from the original dose, but .25 instead of .5
