Tonight (it's night time here) I was getting dinner and I had a large carving knife in my hand. I turned to speak to my DH when Harry, my 18 month old civvie jumped up thinking I had something in my hand for him to eat, and his left eye was cut by the point of the blade. I didn't even realise he was near me. I tried to see the damage but his third eye lid was right over the eye and he couldn't open his eye voluntarily.
I took him to the after hours ER where he was taken straight through to be examined even though they were very busy with other cases. He had to have a pain injection and eye drops before they could see anything because he was in a lot of pain and the third eyelids wouldn't recede.
After the injection had taken effect the vet put a dye in his eye and the cut was very visible. It lit up in a thick lime green line. It was cut across the whole cornea from top to bottom and there was a part at the top that was much deeper. There was also a small cut below the actual eye but in the eye socket, but they said they would heal ok. I was very lucky that the vet attending had done time with an eye specialist. She didn't think the cut had gone deep enough to let the fluid seep out thank goodness, but she said that the part that was deeper could possibly scar and Harry might have a blurry spot in his vision. She said the first three days are critical and it was good that I had gone to the ER straight away so that treatment could be started.
Harry was eventually allowed to come home on an antibiotic ointment and a lubricant ointment for the eye, a10 day course of antibiotics and pain killers. We have to follow up with our local vet and may possibly have to see an eye specialist, depending on the next three days.
Harry was so good the whole time. I was feeling ill and stressed and was horrified I had done that to my precious boy.
He is glad to be home and fed...he still has his left eye closed. He's looking for lots of cuddles, poor boy.

    Just an accident, no guilt.
On Sunday we left the house in a big hurry and locked Marco outside. He's too smart to run away.
I had a 23 year old cat with very dry fur, walked across the coffee table and over a candle. He just flickered a bit before I threw a glass of water over him.
Sam gets knots and after 40+ years of snipping cats you'd think I knew what I was doing. He didn't need stiches.
All the cats that have snuck out the door when I've had my hands full.
You definitely get a pass on this one just for knowing what to do and because you cared enough to do the right thing.
Big hugs for Harry and you. :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: :banghead:

Thank you everyone for all the vines, prayers, thoughts and hugs for Harry. It means a lot to me to have all your support.
It was such a traumatic evening for us both and it has played over and over in my mind.
After a restless start, he settled down and slept all night snuggled up under my chin and against my chest....his favourite spot at night.
This morning he is trying to open the eye but keeps having to close it. He hates the ointments being put in and it is a 2 person job but he doesn't try and struggle, just gives me the evil eye afterwards that makes me feel really mean.
He is eating well which is good...it is his favourite pastime so I would be worried if he didn't eat. I am trying to keep him quiet and have the room darkened to stop the glare. He has been so good and calm the whole time about it all.
I have made an appointment with my normal vet for tomorrow afternoon to see how it is going.

What a scary experience. I'm sure you are way more shaken up by it than Harry is. We have all done things accidentally that have hurt our cats in some way - I sat on Boris when he was just 3.5 months old! The important point here is that you got help for him right away. You are a wonderful mamabean and he is one very lucky kitty to have you.

Sending loads of healing vines for Harry and :bighug:s for you.

So sorry for both Harry and you! Glad the prognosis looks good. Sending loads of healing vines to Harry, and loads of vines for peace and self-forgiveness to you. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
(I once split my then-toddler's eye open as I leaned down toward him just as he stood up - I had an empty coffee cup in my hand and it hit his face. I felt so awful, and so guilty, even though I knew I couldn't have helped it. I can definitely relate to freak accidents!)

Bron, so sorry to read this. What a freak accident. So glad there is no permanent damage. Harry must be uncomfortable to say the least. The light probably bothers it so that's why he keeps it closed. I always fear possible kitchen accidents. My Tux likes to jump on the stove. With glass tops it's even more dangerous. I always make sure the kettle has water in it and put that on burner so he can't come in contact with a hot one. Just wish dh would do the same.
