My 12 year old, Leo, and I have been on the site for a year but not in the forum. I just dosed the Luc (wrong cat) and found a thread of someone who had a similar experience a few years ago. At 7:30am (Pacific Time Zone) I dosed Luc (no diabetic) with .75 Lantus. I have been BG testing every 60 minutes and baseline so far is between 56-65. I also purchased wet with rice and am feeding him regularly. (he is a food hog and would eat until he explodes so this is a small blessing) I also called vet and have them on standby. They agreed I need to just keep feeding him hgh carb and keep an eye on behavior. They suggested I monitor for 24 full hours. Its going to be a long 24 hours.

I'm not a bad mum, just having a bad day. Now that I have pushed away the tears, I am reaching out in case there may be any other pearls of wisdom out there. Thanks for listening, Desiree, Luc and Leo. (Luc left, Leo right)

Oh, no! I hope Luc does okay. He will probably enjoy getting to eat extra food. Did Leo laugh at his brother? 'Hehe.. you got shot this time, not me.' :D

    Welcome to the forum!

Hi there! You're doing everything you can do to keep Luc safe. Thankfully, you recognized the mistake right away.

If I have this figured out correctly, it's been 4.5 hours since you gave the shot? Please confirm or correct. We're all in different time zones so we prefer to talk in hours since the shot was given to local time.

You can also add a few drops of honey or syrup to his food to give his numbers a quick boost.

I can't stay with you so I'm going to move this thread to the Health (Main Forum) so you'll have more eyes on what's happening. Look for this thread over there. I'll also send you the link via private message. Watch the top right side of the page for the notification that you have a message. You'll see a red number. Click on it to get the message.

Both of your cats are gorgeous. Nothing health related to offer sadly as we are new to being diabetic but your kitties both look healthy and gorgeous!

Hi Jill and Alex, Thanks for the feedback. We are USA West coast time zone so at this time it is aprox 5 hours since I dosed. Just did another BG test and at 70. Im using Lantus so I'm not expecting any changes due to dose for another 3-5 hours.

If you have been feeding him high carb, it's possible the food will "wear off" before then, no? It would feel safer to me to keep testing. (Also, if this is a non-diabetic cat, I'm assuming we won't see his numbers go very high, even with lots of carbs?)

Hi Desiree, are you using a human glucose meter or a pet one, ie. Alphatrak? (Sorry if I missed that...)

    ((((Hugs)))) to you. :bighug:

Do you have lots of test strips?

How far away is the vet?

Test every 30 minutes. Do not overfeed. You want the cat a bit hungry in case the numbers tank and you need to bring him up quickly.

    (I can check in periodically.)

It would help us if you could put together a little history of the blood glucose tests you have done so far. And also list them how long since you shot. And knowing your meter type is also important.

    AM (no test)
tests in between from 56-65, giving higher carb food (amounts?)
    +5 hours 70

I hope I have this right. Just copy and edit for updates. The Lantus may be reaching it's peak, so I'd keep testing for a while yet.

    Stay safe Luc!

-I have been testing every hour but as the Lantus kicks in, +6, I will go to 30 minutes intervals.
    Answers to Questions
    +1 is 59
    +2 is 56 (food)
    +3 is 68 (food)
    +4 is 70 (food)
+5 is 59 (food with kero syrup)

-I feed at same time I test (he hates the testing and its working as distraction) using a few spoons of wet food loaded with kero syrup.
-Purina Proplan with rice or pasta (added kero syrup at +5)
    -Vet is 15 minutes away
-I used this sites recommended Reli-On meter. (same one i have used on Leo for last year)

    Thank you!!!

Those seem to be pretty good values considering the extra insulin he has in his system!

Awesome, thanks for the updated list of tests.
Lantus onsets (kicks in) typical from +2 to +3. The nadir, or strongest point is +6 in a typical cat. Not all cats are typical and you don't have data on Luc, so hard to say when his nadir will be. FWIW - my girl hated being typical and occasionally nadired at +12 on Lantus.

That's not been my experience, Lantus usually onsets around +2 and peaks around +6, but that's with a cat who needs insulin. I'm glad you can keep an eye on how Luc is doing and I'd continue to monitor. It sounds like you have the ProPlan savor varieties, those are around 15-17% carbs.

That is true (Quintus was on Lantus) but the onset can be within 2-3 hours, so the fact he's staying stable by +5 I would take as a good sign.

Shouldn't the reaction to insulin be hypo?

Karo can raise the blood sugar and take an hour or two to wear off. Test again in an hour to see if he comes back down.

It was fine to give him a little to help him get over the Lantus peak. But maybe keep it on the shelf unless he goes low again.

In a cat with a fully working pancreas, eating a meal can get the pancreas working and lower blood sugar. So not uncommon to get numbers go down after a meal. 59 and 56 are practically the same number anyway, within meter variance.

Hi Desiree. Just offering some moral support and so glad that you realized your error. We have all made blunders and boo boos along the way on this Feline Diabetic Dance so, you are in good company.

Glad to see him coming up and to echo others, his nadir could be later than our diabetic cat's. If after the next test he is continuing to rise, you might space the test out further since he isn't having a lot of fun with all the poking. Now Luc knows what poor Leo goes through!.

Thank you! Yes, one of those moments you fear but can't imagine doing. Funny, its so true. Leo has taen the test easily since day 1. Luc is really ticked off. In twelve years, I have never said these words "Good thing he is food driven!" lol Great distraction and the only way he forgives me. :)

What type of treats? High or low carb? Looks like he's still in good numbers. I might get a test in another hour (sorry Luc!) before relaxing the testing.

Unfortunately, no.....Lantus is a long acting insulin and can last as long as 16 hours

If you can get 2 hours of rising numbers (without any food), you're probably over the hump

If it is any consultation to you, I tried to plug the meter into the phone charger tonight. Oh, the joys of FD sleep deprivation .

Poor Luc, I am sure he is completely confused. Leo too. Love the picture of them in front of the fire.

Really glad to see the numbers holding in the normal range. Saying a prayer they remain good.

Hi Lizzie, interesting you ask. as soon as i realized what i had done i went to dose leo and then stopped just in case i was wrong. (more evidence of how incredibly "unpresent" i was.) I have been testing Leo as well and his numbers climbed. He is was +1 @273 now +10 @401 (normally in the low 200's) depressing....but forward.
